when moving picture from thread to gallery, does it create a duplicate of the file?

or does the one in the gallery point to the same url in the thread?

want to make sure I'm not having multiple copies of the same picture/video on the server.

    thanks.

It does duplicate files because it will not connect with the attachment.

ouch, that's not good. that will take up lots of HD space for no reason.

is there a way to make it connect to the attachment? or can the gallery photos be stored the same way thread attachments are?

that might make it a little more consistent and save HD space.

That is the advantage of XenGallery. It does not use attachment so it is faster than other competitors. To save space, you should completely migrate threads to use XenGallery for photo sharing.

How can I do that? I'd love to do it and make my whole site faster!

It is fast naturally without our action ;). Because it does not store photos in attachment and it stores photos using different size for faster loading.

How do I migrate threads to use XenGallery for photo sharing?

After import, you can tell users stop uploading photos to threads and do it on XenGallery instead. To include photo in Threads we can use BBCode so it is almost same for viewer.

    Here's an idea....

when users upload an attachment to a thread, can we make it upload to the gallery instead of the attachment file manager?

What if the upload button under the "post new thread" area just sent the pic to the gallery, then let the user place it in the thread as a thumbnail or full image?

I have planned to do that. But that button is next to "Upload a File". Something like "Upload a Photo".

Yeah. You can't tell users to upload on one page, then copy a code, then post bbcode in the forum - that will take too long and the user won't bother using the gallery.

    is this been implemented?
is it possible to upload to the gallery directly from the reply box?

No, at least not as far as I can see it in my installation (version 2.6.5)

I am thinking a lot lately about the different choices a user "should" have theoretically. I did not come yet to a solution for me, what theoretically would be the best way of handling it/ what kind of options I would like to offer to my users.

It has to be a compromise. I do not want to offer my users too many choices for more or less the same thing. Users will not understand it, more questions are asked to the moderators of my forums, more workload.

So I am a fan of one simple procedure for uploading images, no matter how it does look like in the end.

If you offer them two different options, lets call it the "XF-way" (into threads) and a theoretically "Xengallery-way" in a future version of XG, I do think this will be a mess. So then you need in the ACP an option to uncheck one of both, so that only one way is visible/usable for the specific usergroup.

Depending on the size of your board, storing images into a database can slow down your board significantly, deending on what kind of hosting you are and its perfomance. So check that first and how much you are willing to pa for hosting before ending up with a feature, you can not use anymore after 2 years. Tell that after two years your users. I am sure not a very nice experience for an admin ;)

I think I rather have the Xengallery as an option for paying members, to have a gallery which they can use also for other internetsites (similar ike all Flickr users are doing it at the moment) and for injecting the images easily in the my forum-threads via textbox-icons.

But for injecting the image via textbox-icons, it has to be sure that the size-option (3 sizes) are in lie with the usergroup settings within Xenforo ACP. Otherwise that leads to discussions with your users and theerfore to unnecessary workload ;)

Actually the idea is upload to gallery from the editor then allow insert (as the existent gallery photos).
