    I have been out of the web design game for nearly a decade so I figured I might not know what my best options are these days looking to start a community on an oldschool style forum. I plan to do lots of customization and possibly integration with WordPress but I might avoid that if other options have more features. I have experience with vBulletin, phpBB, IPB, XMB, UBB and a few others.

    If you are ready to invest a bit in licenses xenforo might be the right thing for you as it is highly customizable and there are great and modern plugins for almost anything available. Have a look to Themehouse's plugins and themes, you will find even a plugin to integrate with wordpress.
