I know how software dev works, so hate to ask - but can you guess which quarter in 2018 it may come out?

    Hi Sonnb,

once your XenGaller 3.x is out how will be licence holders with licences of Xengallery 2.x will be handled? Are they able to upgrade with a current active licence, do they need to buy a totally new licence?

    As a sidenote:

As long as XF 2.0 does not offer a significant advantage over XF1.5.19, I am not that much interested in upgrading to XF2.0.

XF 2.0 is featurewise only on par with XF 1.5.19. There are too many addons which are not compatible yet with XF2.0. I guess around 80-90% of the addons I use on my sites are not XF2 ready.

My advise would be: Never rush too early into such a big change. If something goes wrong, your users will kill you. XF1.5.19 just works excellent and is a mature product. Never touch a running system, if there is no upside for it ;)

Even Brogan I think wrote somewhere in the Xenforo discussions, that he will not upgrade for the next 6-12 months. He will know why ;)

Just because some sites have a huge number of add ons and are taking it slow is no reason for this gallery not to recieve a speedy update, only each admin will know what's best for them. I've seen a fair few sites make the switch already.

The faster more sites make the jump to XF2, the faster more devs will start producing XF2 compatible add ons, which we need considering how slow it feels the core is getting new features compared to IPB. There's a ton of " have you seen"s here.

We need the momentum as IPB have recently announced quite a large upgrade to their gallery in the forthcoming release making it more much similar to this gallery, especially with regards to the light box view.

Good luck with IPB. They changed so often their licence agreements in the past, that I do not trust them anymore. Did you know that they originally came from Ikonboard and they promised at that time that IPB would be free forever?

And how about now the pressure to switch to their hostingplans? How long do you think it will take until tehy do not allow anymore to buy a selfhosted licence?

Finally, how many forums do you know, who use IPB? Do you think your users like to learn a new forum handling, if they are used from other forums always XF?

No, I feel very comfortable and relaxed with XF :)

Users will not leave your forum because they miss a smilie or a specific feature. They will leave if the usbility changes dramatically (i.e. with a new software) or because content is lacking. But not because you stick a couple of months longer with XF1.5x ;)

That is correct. That is why I mentioned in the other posting, that there is no reason to rush into XF2 too fast.

Many site owners even do not know what are the real differences between XF1.5.19 and XF2.0 It is time to get realistic expectations, what XF 2.0 is able to do and what not. At the moment, it will make only for a very few sites a difference. And for the users of those sites even less meaningful differences, if you have already a good mobile freindly template with XF1.5x.

Why do you think that? No developper is sleeping. All are working on XF2.0 compatible versions of course. But think first from the view of a developper:

They have to write a totally new addon. This is not just an upgrade of an old addon. This takes a lot of time, nobody of us is paying in advance.

Additionally, nobody knows, which new features XF plans for version 2.1. This is the big question mark. XF2.1 will have new features compared to XF 1.5x/2.0x.

So there is a realistic risk for a developper of an external addon, that his addon becomes obsolete because this feature will be in the core of XF2.1. Therefore there is a lot of downside risk for third party addon-developers too.

IPB is only playing the marketing drums. I do not care. Do not get under pressure by those marketing tricks. If you need always the latest and greatest and always with the company that offers it first, you are ending up with changing every 12 months the forum software back and forth ;)

Focus on developing your community. Focus on content, not on features. I am sure that XF will add also new features in the future. But nobody will reinvent the wheel. Neither IPB, nor XF. If there is a hole in features, it will be filled with addons for sure sooner or later. :)

Stay with the forum software you personally like the most and relax :)

    Lots of good points

With regards to the faster more admins jumping to XF2 the better, that's just a numbers game. The more admins that are on the 2.0 platform, the greater the pool of customers for devs to buy their products. It's in their best interest to get admins to jump so they can start buying XF2 add ons.

Some of it is marketing, but some of it is genuinely good. The gallery lightbox is now a million times better than the stock XF one, and on a par with Son's, which has been available for years now.

They're now enabling video upload to posts, which is massive for some niche's. (Although it doesn't sound like there's any kid of transcoding options, which seems like an oversight)

They also have a very comprehensive 1st party groups add on, which I really like. There's two groups add ons for XF, one is very basic, and the other can be buggy and development and comms from the dev is sporadic.

There's tons of other really basic stuff that isn't even in the XF core yet - like user profile cover photos. It's so 5 yeas ago, yet we're still relying on add ons for that feature.

I like XF and I don't want to switch, but it just feels like IPB have made so much progress in the last 12 months with regards to new features compared to all the other options and XF doesn't stand much of a chance of catching up with only 3 devs working on it. I don't care about paying for these new features, as long as they work well.

I guess we'll see what happens with 2.1 and what else this summer brings us.

About this I have shared on XF.com, 3.x of course requires lot of works to compatible with XF2 but I will never make it requires a new license. It makes no sense I have 1.x but I have to pay to use 2.x. That is also what I expected when I own a software.

That is very nice from you, but be aware that not all addon-developers handles this the same way. Most charge a new licence fee because they have to code it again from zero totally new.

Do not misundersstand me. I do not beg to pay more money :)

But I want to make sure that it is worth it for you to offer XenGallery also for XF 2.x. At the end, even if we have to pay again money, we all win, because you are able then to focus better on the developmen of the XenGallery.

This addon has to survive and few more features need to be added, no matter how much this costs! This is then a win-win-situation for all of us. ;)

I agree. I think devs that release complete rewrites included in the original licence are being very generous.

As with Snoopy - I'm definitely not requesting to pay again. But if it means the add on is developed more speedily and then once released, maintained and updated more regularly then I'm happy to pay for that.

It gets incredibly frustrating when some devs take forever to implement bug fixes and add features. If the extra bit of money makes it more worth while to you and hence improves the product, I'm all for it.
